**Quick answer:** Chamkaur Sahib, in Rupnagar district, is where Guru Gobind Singh’s
two elder sons, Baba Ajit Singh and Baba Jujhar Singh, fell fighting the Mughal
army in **December 1704**. **Gurdwara Katalgarh Sahib**, also called Shahidganj,
marks the spot, and Google Maps lists it as **open 24 hours**. Google Maps shows
about **49 to 51 km** (roughly an hour) from Chandigarh; the district portal says
about 55 km.

Chamkaur Sahib sits on the Sirhind Canal, north-west of Chandigarh, and several
gurdwaras there are tied to the events of 1704. This guide draws on the Rupnagar
district portal, Wikipedia and Google Maps, and it says where they differ.

## What happened at Chamkaur in December 1704

The Rupnagar district portal says Guru Gobind Singh reached Chamkaur in 1704 with
his two elder sons and 40 followers, closely pursued. They came to a garden that
belonged to Raja Bidhi Chand, where Gurdwara Damdama Sahib stands today. Wikipedia
describes the place where the Sikhs took shelter as a garhi, the fortified house
of a local zamindar, and gives the date of the battle as 6 December 1704, while
noting that some scholars argue for 7 December.

Gurdwara Katalgarh Sahib, also known as Shahidganj, marks where Baba Ajit Singh
and Baba Jujhar Singh fell fighting the Mughal army, along with 37 followers, according
to the district portal. Wikipedia lists several other Sikhs by name and cites Mughal
sources for about 700 cavalry and a park of artillery on the other side. It also
says the five beloved Sikhs asked the Guru to leave the battlefield to continue
leading the community, while Sangat Singh, dressed in the Guru’s clothes, stayed
behind. That Wikipedia article has carried a “needs more citations” notice since
2011, so we treat its finer details with care and give no single casualty total.
