**Quick answer:** Diwali 2026 falls on **Sunday, 8 November**, with Chandigarh’s
Lakshmi Puja muhurat running **5:52 PM to 7:46 PM**. The five-day festival opens
with [Dhanteras](https://chdlife.com/dhanteras-chandigarh/) on **Friday, 6 November**
and closes with [Bhai Dooj](https://chdlife.com/bhai-dooj-chandigarh/) on **Wednesday,
11 November**. In the tricity, Diwali melas and traders’ fairs are held at venues
such as Sector 17 Plaza (2026 dates are added below as they are announced), and
most of the real celebration happens inside homes and residential societies rather
than on the street.

_Date last checked on 7 October 2026 against the Chandigarh Administration’s 2026
holiday list and Drik Panchang (calculated for Chandigarh)._

Every 2026 festival date, with its weekday and whether it is a holiday in Chandigarh,
is in our [Chandigarh festival calendar](https://chdlife.com/chandigarh-festival-calendar/).

| At a glance | |
| Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) | Sunday, 8 November 2026 |
| Lakshmi Puja muhurat (calculated for Chandigarh) | 5:52 PM to 7:46 PM |
| Pradosh Kaal | 5:30 PM to 8:09 PM |
| Amavasya tithi | 11:27 AM on 8 November to 12:31 PM on 9 November |
| Public holiday in Chandigarh | Sunday, 8 November 2026 (Chandigarh Administration notification) |
| Crackers | Only CSIR-NEERI green crackers, 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Diwali day |
| Diwali 2027 | Friday, 29 October 2027 |

Chandigarh doesn’t do Diwali the way Delhi or Amritsar does — there’s no single
sprawling bazaar that defines the city’s festival, and the fireworks don’t turn
the sky orange the way they used to before cracker restrictions tightened. What
you get instead is a fairly organised, sector-by-sector version of the festival:
markets get busy for about ten days before the main night, housing societies run
their own rangoli and lighting contests, and the Sector 17 Plaza mela is the closest
thing the city has to a big public gathering. This guide sticks to what’s actually
true of Diwali here, not a generic listicle written for every city in India.

## Diwali melas and fairs 2026: confirmed so far

 * **29th CII Chandigarh Fair** – Parade Ground, Sector 17, Friday 30 October to
Monday 2 November 2026, 10 AM to 8 PM ([CII Chandigarh Fair site](https://ciichandigarhfair.in/show-timings/)).
 * **Mohali Diwali Mela**, Dussehra Ground, Sector 79 – 2026 dates not announced
as of 18 October; see our [Mohali Diwali Mela page](https://chdlife.com/mohali-diwali-mela/).
 * **Chandigarh Carnival**, Leisure Valley, Sector 10 – listed by Chandigarh Tourism
for the last weekend of November ([Chandigarh Tourism](https://chandigarhtourism.gov.in/pages/event/70)).

## Diwali 2026 Date & Puja Muhurat in Chandigarh

  | Day | Date | Occasion |
   | Day 1 | Friday, 6 November 2026 | Dhanteras (Dhantrayodashi) |
 | Day 2 | Saturday, 7 November 2026 | Kali Chaudas / Chhoti Diwali eve |
 | Day 3 | Sunday, 8 November 2026 | Narak Chaturdashi, Lakshmi Puja & Diwali |
 | Day 4 | Tuesday, 10 November 2026 | Govardhan Puja (panchang date; the Chandigarh Administration’s holiday list marks it on Monday, 9 November) |
 | Day 5 | Wednesday, 11 November 2026 | Bhai Dooj |

One quirk this year: Narak Chaturdashi (usually a separate “Chhoti Diwali” day)
and the main Lakshmi Puja both fall on the same date, 8 November, because of how
the Chaturdashi and Amavasya tithis line up in 2026. That’s normal panchang behaviour,
not an error — it happens every few years.

**Lakshmi Puja Muhurat (Chandigarh):** 5:52 PM – 7:46 PM, within Pradosh Kaal. _Timings
are calculated for Chandigarh and sourced from [Drik Panchang](https://www.drikpanchang.com/diwali/diwali-puja-calendar.html?geoname-id=1274746&year=2026);
always cross-check against a local Panchang closer to the date, since exact minute-
level timings can shift slightly._

## Diwali Melas in Chandigarh

The melas are where Diwali actually feels public in Chandigarh — everywhere else,
it’s a home and neighbourhood festival. Expect stalls selling diyas, décor, dry
fruits and winter clothes, food counters, and an evening stage show most nights
in the run-up to the festival.

 * **Sector 17 market**: in October 2024 the Business Promotion Council, a traders’
body, held a Diwali fair here, which the Governor visited. Confirm this year’s
dates and venue with the traders before you go.
 * **Terrace Garden Mela (Sector 33)** – smaller and more crafts-focused, known
   for cultural performances.
 * **Panchkula & Zirakpur melas** – neighbourhood-scale versions with food stalls
and rides, worth checking if you’re closer to that side of the tricity.
 * **Elante Mall Diwali Festivities** – the indoor, air-conditioned option, with
festive décor and shopping offers rather than a traditional mela feel.

If you’re heading to Mohali specifically, we’ve covered that mela separately — see
[Mohali Diwali Mela](https://chdlife.com/mohali-diwali-mela/) for dates and what
to expect there.

## Best Places for Diwali Shopping in Chandigarh

### Traditional Markets

 * **Sector 22 Market** – the go-to for diyas, candles, lamps and festive décor.
 * **Sector 19 & Sector 15 Markets** – budget-friendly clothes, gift items and string
   lights.
 * **Sector 34 Market** – better for electronics and home décor than for traditional
   festive items.

### Malls & Modern Shopping

 * [**Elante Mall**](https://www.nexusselecttrust.com/nexus-elante) – the premium
option, with the most elaborate seasonal décor of any mall in the city.
 * **DLF City Centre Mall** – fashion and lifestyle gifting, less crowded than Elante.
 * **VR Punjab Mall** – festive shopping with a strong food-court line-up.

## Diwali Gift Ideas in Chandigarh

 * **Traditional sweets & dry fruits** – from Sindhi Sweets, Gopal Sweets or Bikanervala.
 * **Diyas & candles** – local bazaars in Sector 22 and 19 have the widest range.
 * **Chocolates & hampers** – Nik Baker’s, Oven Fresh and the gifting counters at
   Elante Mall.
 * **Home décor & handicrafts** – Diwali melas or Fabindia, if you want something
   that isn’t mass-produced.
 * **Eco-friendly hampers** – handmade décor and clay diyas, increasingly easy to
   find at the melas.

## Best Diwali Sweets Shops in Chandigarh

 * **Sindhi Sweets** (Sector 17 & 22) – the local favourite for classic mithai.
 * **Gopal Sweets** (multiple locations) – wide variety of laddoos and barfis, good
   festive packaging for gifting.
 * **Bikanervala** (Sector 26) – reliable for dry-fruit gift boxes.
 * **Shastri Sweets** (Sector 34) – known specifically for gulab jamun and jalebi.
 * [**Nik Baker’s**](https://www.nikbakers.com/) – for cakes and fusion desserts
if you want to skip traditional mithai altogether.

## Eco-Friendly Diwali in Chandigarh

More Chandigarh households are moving away from plastic lighting and high-smoke
crackers each year — a few practical swaps:

 * Clay diyas instead of plastic string lights for the entrance and balcony.
 * LED lights over incandescent strings — cheaper to run and they survive multiple
   seasons.
 * Green crackers only, and only within the permitted time window (see below).
 * Buying decor and sweets from local artisans and small vendors at the melas rather
   than mass-market imports.
 * Cloth or paper gift wrapping instead of plastic-laminated packaging.

## Best Diwali Lights & Decorations in Chandigarh

 * **Sector 17 Plaza** – the central hub, lit up the most elaborately of anywhere
   in the city.
 * **Elante Mall & VR Punjab Mall** – modern, mall-style festive lighting.
 * **Rock Garden Road & Sukhna Lake area** – less crowded, good for an evening walk
   and photos rather than shopping.
 * **Residential sectors (21, 35 and similar)** – individual homes and societies
often put up more elaborate lighting than the commercial areas, especially closer
   to the main night.

## Firecracker Rules in Chandigarh

The Chandigarh Administration’s order dated 18 October 2025 already fixes Diwali-
day cracker use at 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM and says it stays in force until further
orders. A fresh order for this year may still replace it, so check the Administration’s
notices closer to 8 November. The 2026 stall licences were drawn on 14 September:
96 stalls at 13 sites, from 4,100 applications ([Chandigarh Administration press release](https://chdpr.gov.in/press/4806)).
The largest are at the Dussehra Ground in Sector 43 (15 stalls), near the Fire Station
Office in Manimajra (12) and next to the Old Rehri Market in Sector 46 (11); the
others are in Sectors 24, 28, 29, 30, 33-C, 37-C, 40 and 49, Ramdarbar and Dhanas.
The standing order says: only CSIR-NEERI-certified green crackers, sold only through
licensed traders, no series crackers (laris) even if green, no online sales, and
use on Diwali day strictly from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. **Don’t rely on last year’s
notification** — check the official Chandigarh Administration or UT Police notice
closer to 8 November for the confirmed window and any changes.

## Diwali Rituals & Traditions in Chandigarh

 * **Lakshmi Puja** – families worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on the main
night, within the muhurat window above.
 * **Rangoli competitions** – common in residential societies across the city in
   the days before Diwali.
 * **Gift exchange** – sweets, dry fruits and small gifts circulate between neighbours
and family in the run-up to the festival.
 * **Community feasts** – gurudwaras and temples across the tricity serve festive
langar around the Diwali–Bandi Chhor Divas period, since Sikhs mark Bandi Chhor
Divas on the same day as Diwali.

## Where to Dine Out This Diwali

Chandigarh’s larger hotels typically run festive buffets and special menus around
Diwali — worth booking ahead since tables fill up fast on the main evening:

 * [**JW Marriott**](https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/ixcjw-jw-marriott-hotel-chandigarh/overview/),
   Sector 35
 * **Taj Chandigarh**
 * **Hyatt Regency**
 * **Barbeque Nation & Pirates of Grill** – for a more casual unlimited-dining option

Call ahead to confirm this year’s Diwali-specific menu and pricing — festive buffets
get finalised closer to the date and change year to year.

## Family-Friendly Diwali Activities

 * Visiting the Diwali melas and their amusement rides.
 * Decorating homes with rangoli and diyas as a family activity.
 * Hosting card parties and family get-togethers, a genuinely widespread Diwali
   tradition in North Indian households.
 * Watching organised fireworks displays rather than bursting crackers at home.
 * Eco-Diwali workshops at some schools and community centres in the weeks before
   the festival.

## Diwali And The Holiday List

The Chandigarh Administration’s 2026 holiday notification lists Diwali on Sunday,
8 November 2026. It lists Govardhan Puja/Vishwakarma Day on Monday, 9 November 2026
and Bhai Duj on Wednesday, 11 November 2026. Its Schedule III, for holidays within
the meaning of Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, includes Diwali and
Govardhan Puja, so check with your branch before planning banking around those two
days.

Diwali 2027 falls on Friday, 29 October 2027, with Dhanteras two days earlier on
Wednesday, 27 October 2027.

## Travel Tips for Diwali in Chandigarh

 * Book hotels early if you’re travelling in from outside the tricity.
 * Use public transport on the main Diwali night — parking around Sector 17 and
   the malls gets difficult.
 * Avoid peak evening hours in Sector 22 and Sector 17 markets in the days right
   before Diwali.
 * Stay updated on cracker-sale guidelines and mela timings closer to the date,
since both shift year to year.

one big public event. That’s not a shortcoming; it’s just what the festival actually
looks like here. Shop early, keep an eye on the mela and cracker-timing updates
closer to the date, and the rest takes care of itself.
