**Quick answer:** Fateh Burj, at Chappar Chiri village on the edge of Mohali, is
a victory tower about 100 m (328 ft) tall that remembers Banda Singh Bahadur’s win
over the Mughal commander Wazir Khan in the Battle of Chappar Chiri on **12 May
1710**. Google Maps shows about **16 km** and **24 minutes** by road from Chandigarh,
and the listing showed it opening at **10 am** when we checked overnight.

The tower is a modern memorial, not an old fort, but it sits on the ground of one
of the best-known battles in Punjab’s history. This guide draws on Wikipedia, the
Mohali (SAS Nagar) district portal and Google Maps, and it marks what each source
does and does not say.

## The Battle of Chappar Chiri

Wikipedia says the Battle of Chappar Chiri, also called the Battle of Sirhind, was
fought on 12 May 1710 between the Mughal Empire and the Sikhs at Chappar Chiri,
about 20 km from Sirhind. The Sikhs, led by Banda Singh Bahadur, were marching on
Sirhind to avenge the killing of Guru Gobind Singh’s two younger sons, and Wazir
Khan, the deputy governor of Sirhind, faced them at Chappar Chiri.

The article puts Wazir Khan’s force at more than 20,000, with artillery, musketeers,
and war elephants, and describes Banda Singh’s army as poorly equipped, with no
artillery or elephants and few horses. It says Wazir Khan was killed in the fighting,
his army fell back on Sirhind, and the Sikhs then besieged, stormed and razed the
city. The account draws on historians who differ on the make-up of Banda Singh’s
army, so treat the numbers and the detail as Wikipedia’s summary, not settled figures.

## The tower and the memorial

Wikipedia calls Fateh Burj the tallest victory tower in India, at 328 feet (100
m), completed in 2011 and dedicated to the establishment of the Sikh misls over
a large part of Punjab in 1711. It stands on Banda Singh Bahadur Road, about 20
km from Sirhind. Google Maps describes the place as a 100-m minaret dedicated to
Banda Singh Bahadur and names it a war memorial. Visitors mention statues of Banda
Singh Bahadur around the tower, and we could see equestrian statues on grassy mounds
in the 2020 photograph below.
