**Quick answer:** Lohri 2027 falls on **Thursday, 14 January** (Sankranti moment
9:14 PM), the evening before Makar Sankranti. Chandigarh’s Municipal Corporation
runs an official Lohri bonfire event at the MCC building, Sector 17, with giddha
and boliyaan performed by MC staff — alongside the everyday household bonfire tradition
across Punjabi families in the tricity.

Lohri is a genuinely Punjabi festival, and Chandigarh — built for and largely settled
by Punjabi families after Partition — treats it as one. It’s not a public spectacle
the way Diwali or Dussehra are; it’s a neighbourhood and household festival built
around a bonfire, and the city’s own civic version of it is smaller and more understated
than you might expect from a state capital.

## Lohri 2027 Date

Lohri falls on **Thursday, 14 January 2027**, the evening before Makar Sankranti(
Friday, 15 January). It’s calculated on the solar Hindu calendar rather than the
lunar one, so unlike Diwali or Holi, the date barely shifts year to year — it’s
almost always 13 or 14 January. _Source: [Drik Panchang](https://www.drikpanchang.com/calendars/indian/sikh-festivals/lohri/lohri-date-time.html?geoname-id=1274746&year=2027)._

## How Lohri Is Celebrated in Chandigarh

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation holds its own official Lohri event at the MCC
building, Sector 17 — a bonfire lighting followed by a cultural programme of giddha
and boliyaan performed by MC employees, a genuinely local, civic-run tradition rather
than a private event. Beyond that, Lohri in Chandigarh is mostly a residential-society
and household festival: families and neighbours gather around bonfires in the evening,
sing traditional Lohri songs, and share peanuts, popcorn, gajak and til (sesame)
sweets.

In recent years, some of the city’s clubs and lounges have added a modern layer
to the evening — Lohri-themed parties alongside the traditional household bonfires—
but the core of the festival here remains the same as anywhere else in Punjab: a
fire, family, and food.

## Lohri Traditions

 * **The bonfire** — the centrepiece of the evening; families and neighbours gather
   around it after sunset.
 * **Offerings to the fire** — til, gajak, peanuts, popcorn and rewri are traditionally
thrown into the flames as an offering before being shared and eaten.
 * **Lohri songs** — traditional songs, including the well-known “Sundar Mundriye,”
are sung around the fire, often referencing the Punjabi folk hero Dulla Bhatti.
 * **First Lohri** — families celebrating a baby’s or newlywed couple’s first Lohri
often mark the occasion with a larger gathering.

### When is Lohri in 2027?

Lohri falls on Thursday, 14 January 2027, the evening before Makar Sankranti.

### Is there an official Lohri event in Chandigarh?

Yes — the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation holds a Lohri bonfire and cultural programme(
giddha and boliyaan) at the MCC building, Sector 17. Beyond that, it’s mainly a
household and neighbourhood festival.

### What foods are traditionally eaten at Lohri?

Til (sesame) sweets, gajak, peanuts, popcorn and rewri — traditionally offered to
the bonfire first, then shared among the gathering.

### Why does the Lohri date barely change each year?

Lohri follows the solar Hindu calendar (tied to the sun’s transit into Capricorn),
unlike lunar-calendar festivals such as Diwali or Holi, so it falls on 13 or 14
January nearly every year.

Lohri in Chandigarh isn’t a citywide event to plan a trip around — it’s a genuine,
lived Punjabi tradition happening in homes and societies across every sector, with
the MC’s own Sector 17 bonfire as the one public touchpoint if you want to see it
beyond a private gathering.
