By now, we all know that we are lucky to reside in this beautiful city. It was the best experiment of urban planning and modern architecture in the twentieth century in India. It wouldn’t be a stretch to call this city ‘perfect’. The architect Le Corbusier was equally careful while planning the city. Hence, he did not add sector 13 because Mr Corbusier considered it unlucky. Haha! Who knew? The UT Chandigarh has never had a Sector 13. But now, after 54 years, the new sector is finally into existence. In early 2020, the UT administration announced that Manimajra would officially be known as sector 13.

Do you know where the idea came from?

The concept of having sector 13 came from the PUDA (Punjab Urban Development Agency). While drafting the New Chandigarh map that is itself inspired by Chandigarh, which has 21 sectors. Sector 1 to 21 but no sector 13. Sector 17 reserved as an open shopping Place. To ensure effective planning the grid system of Chandigarh was adopted. But, PUDA decided to have sector 13 as a symbol of Good Luck and fortunate. Why?

In Punjab, the major Festivals like Lohri and Vaisakhi fall on the 13th day of January and April every year, which symbolises the spark of life and fertility. Under the Hindu calendar, the 13th day is an auspicious day for Hindus. This day, every month is dedicated to Lord Shiva and reserved for the fast of ‘Pradosh Vrat’ The most significant festival, ‘Maha Shivaratri’ dedicated to Lord Shiva, celebrated on the 13th night in Magh’s month. Greeks and Thais also consider Number 13 as Lucky and fortunate.

Isn’t it interesting to have Sector 13? People soon will have their residential and commercial places in this Sector. I believe that there are no such things as superstitious or considering a number as bad luck. Why do we have this number if we know that it will be unlucky and bring bad luck? Would we have directly jumped to number 14 after 12, right?
