Quick answer: For serious or complex illness, most people in Chandigarh go to PGIMER (Sector 12) or GMCH (Sector 32), both government teaching hospitals. GMSH-16 is the city’s main government district hospital. The big private multispeciality hospitals are in Mohali and Panchkula: Fortis (Phase 8), Max (Phase 6), Paras (Panchkula Sector 22), Alchemist (Panchkula Sector 21) and Livasa (Mohali Sector 71). In an emergency, dial 112.

This guide lists the main hospitals in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, split into government and private, with the address and the official contact each hospital publishes. We have kept it to facts you can check. We do not rank hospitals against each other, because the right choice depends on the illness, your insurance or government scheme, and how far you are from the hospital.

Last checked: 7 October 2026. Phone numbers change, so confirm on the hospital’s own website before you travel.

In an emergency

  • Dial 112, India’s single emergency number, for police, fire or ambulance.
  • Go to the nearest hospital with a 24-hour emergency department rather than the “best” one across town.
  • Carry an ID card, your Ayushman Bharat, CGHS or insurance card if you have one, and any old prescriptions or reports.
  • For other city numbers, see our Chandigarh helpline numbers.

How to choose

  • Cost. Government hospitals (PGIMER, GMCH, GMSH, the civil hospitals) charge very little. Private hospitals cost far more, so check what your insurance or scheme covers first.
  • Waiting time. PGIMER and GMCH OPDs are very busy. For routine problems, try GMSH-16 or your district civil hospital first.
  • Insurance and schemes. Ask the hospital’s TPA or insurance desk before admission whether your policy is cashless there.
  • Distance. In an emergency, the closest hospital with a 24-hour emergency department is usually the right one.
