Chandigarh doesn’t do Diwali the way Delhi or Amritsar does — there’s no single sprawling bazaar that defines the city’s festival, and the fireworks don’t turn the sky orange the way they used to before cracker restrictions tightened. What you get instead is a fairly organised, sector-by-sector version of the festival: markets get busy for about ten days before the main night, housing societies run their own rangoli and lighting contests, and the Sector 17 Plaza mela is the closest thing the city has to a big public gathering. This guide sticks to what’s actually true of Diwali here, not a generic listicle written for every city in India.

Diwali 2026 Date & Puja Muhurat in Chandigarh

One quirk this year: Narak Chaturdashi (usually a separate “Chhoti Diwali” day) and the main Lakshmi Puja both fall on the same date, 8 November, because of how the Chaturdashi and Amavasya tithis line up in 2026. That’s normal panchang behaviour, not an error — it happens every few years.

Lakshmi Puja Muhurat (Chandigarh): 5:52 PM – 7:46 PM, within Pradosh Kaal. Timings are calculated for Chandigarh and sourced from Drik Panchang; always cross-check against a local Panchang closer to the date, since exact minute-level timings can shift slightly.

Diwali Melas in Chandigarh

The melas are where Diwali actually feels public in Chandigarh — everywhere else, it’s a home and neighbourhood festival. Expect stalls selling diyas, décor, dry fruits and winter clothes, food counters, and an evening stage show most nights in the run-up to the festival.

• Sector 17 market: in October 2024 the Business Promotion Council, a traders’ body, held a Diwali fair here, which the Governor visited. Confirm this year’s dates and venue with the traders before you go.
• Terrace Garden Mela (Sector 33) – smaller and more crafts-focused, known for cultural performances.
• Panchkula & Zirakpur melas – neighbourhood-scale versions with food stalls and rides, worth checking if you’re closer to that side of the tricity.
• Elante Mall Diwali Festivities – the indoor, air-conditioned option, with festive décor and shopping offers rather than a traditional mela feel.

Firecracker Rules in Chandigarh

The Chandigarh Administration’s order dated 18 October 2025 already fixes Diwali-day cracker use at 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM and says it stays in force until further orders. A fresh order for this year may still replace it, so check the Administration’s notices closer to 8 November. The 2026 stall licences have already been drawn: 96 stalls at 13 sites. The standing order says: only CSIR-NEERI-certified green crackers, sold only through licensed traders, no series crackers (laris) even if green, no online sales, and use on Diwali day strictly from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Don’t rely on last year’s notification — check the official Chandigarh Administration or UT Police notice closer to 8 November for the confirmed window and any changes.

Diwali Rituals & Traditions in Chandigarh

• Lakshmi Puja – families worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on the main night, within the muhurat window above.
• Rangoli competitions – common in residential societies across the city in the days before Diwali.
• Gift exchange – sweets, dry fruits and small gifts circulate between neighbours and family in the run-up to the festival.
• Community feasts – gurudwaras and temples across the tricity serve festive langar around the Diwali–Bandi Chhor Divas period, since the two often fall close together.

Timings For Each Of The Five Days (Chandigarh)

All times are Drik Panchang calculations for Chandigarh. The Chandigarh Administration’s holiday list has Govardhan Puja on Monday, 9 November 2026 instead, so the two authorities differ by a day.

Diwali And The Holiday List

The Chandigarh Administration’s 2026 holiday notification lists Diwali on Sunday, 8 November 2026. It lists Govardhan Puja/Vishwakarma Day on Monday, 9 November 2026 and Bhai Duj on Wednesday, 11 November 2026. Its Schedule III, for holidays within the meaning of Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, includes Diwali and Govardhan Puja, so check with your branch before planning banking around those two days.

Diwali 2027

Diwali 2027 falls on Friday, 29 October 2027, with Dhanteras two days earlier on Wednesday, 27 October 2027.
