The Karwa Chauth day in Chandigarh, hour by hour
Drik Panchang calculates every time below for Chandigarh. They are astronomical calculations, not an announcement by a temple or the administration.
| Moment | Chandigarh, 29 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Fast begins at sunrise | 6:35 AM |
| Sunset | 5:38 PM |
| Puja muhurat | 5:38 PM to 6:55 PM |
| Moonrise | 8:12 PM |
| Fourth day (Chaturthi tithi) ends | 10:09 PM |
The fast runs 13 hours 37 minutes from sunrise to moonrise. Drik Panchang says the best time for the puja is Sandhya time, which starts after sunset, and its muhurat opens at 5:38 PM, the same minute as sunset in Chandigarh. The fourth-day tithi began at 1:06 AM that morning and runs to 10:09 PM, so moonrise at 8:12 PM falls nearly two hours before the tithi ends. The same day is also Sankashti Chaturthi, the Ganesha fast.
Sargi, the evening puja and the moon
In Punjab, sargi is the pre-dawn meal, and it always includes fenia. By tradition the fasting woman’s mother-in-law sends or gives it to her. Eat it before sunrise: the fast starts at 6:35 AM, and from then until the moon is sighted there is no food and not a drop of water.
In the evening the fasting women sit in a circle with their puja thalis while a version of the Karwa Chauth story is narrated with pauses. The karwa itself is the earthen pot from which the water offering, argha, is made to the moon.
When the moon is up, women view it, or its reflection in a vessel of water, through a sieve or through the cloth of a dupatta, and then look at their husband’s face through the sieve. The husband offers water from the thali, and her first sip of the day ends the fast. Details differ by region, community and family, so follow your own household’s custom.
Shopping and mehndi before the day
Wikipedia’s account of the festival says women start preparing a few days ahead, buying adornments, jewellery and puja items, and that local bazaars take on a festive look with Karva Chauth products on display. Women apply mehndi to themselves and each other on the day.
In Chandigarh’s plan each sector has a main shopping street bisecting it. Sector 17 Plaza is closed to vehicles and has a multilevel parking lot instead; it is also a no-vending zone. We could not find an official or organiser listing of Karwa Chauth stalls, mehndi artists or salon offers for 2026, so contact artists and salons directly and ask for the rate up front. See also our Sector 17 market guide.
Is Karwa Chauth a holiday in Chandigarh?
The Chandigarh Administration’s 2026 notification lists Karaka Chaturthi (Karwa Chouth) on Thursday, 29 October 2026 in its list of restricted holidays. Restricted means it is not a general public holiday: each employee may choose any two restricted holidays for the year. Ask your employer whether it lets you take this one. For 2027 the central government’s list has Karwa Chauth on Monday, 18 October 2027; the Chandigarh Administration published its 2026 list on 30 December 2025, so expect its 2027 list near the end of 2026.
