Ganesh Chaturthi Chandigarh isn’t Mumbai or Pune scale, and this guide won’t pretend otherwise — but it’s a real, growing tricity tradition, centred on Panchkula, with genuine community processions and a specific, verifiable immersion site. Here’s what’s actually happening, and when.

Is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated in Chandigarh & the Tricity?

Honestly — not the way it’s celebrated back in Maharashtra. Chandigarh doesn’t have street-corner pandals every few hundred metres the way Pune or Mumbai does. What it does have is a genuine, community-driven celebration that’s grown steadily over the years, led by Marathi, Marwari and other communities settled across the tricity, with the biggest public gathering point in Panchkula, not Chandigarh proper.

Families and community groups install Ganesh idols at home and in local societies across Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur for the full ten-day Ganeshotsav, with the public face of the festival — the visarjan processions — converging on Panchkula on the final day.

Ganesh Visarjan in Panchkula: The Ghaggar River

On Anant Chaturdashi, processions from across the tricity make their way to the Ghaggar River in Panchkula for idol immersion — the same pattern local newspapers have reported for years running. Idols go in at multiple points along the river, chiefly:

• Sector 25, near Majri Chowk Bridge
• Sector 21 — the same ghat used for Chhath Puja later in the year

Expect dhols, dancing, and colour on the streets as families, youth groups and community organisations carry idols through the day — and expect traffic. Processions have historically backed up the Zirakpur flyover, Sector 20, and the highway stretch toward Chandigarh, so if you’re driving through Panchkula on Visarjan day, build in extra time or route around it.

Police and civic authorities monitor the Ghaggar’s water level closely on the day and restrict devotees from wading into deeper stretches — river levels can run high if there’s been recent rain, so stick to the marked, supervised immersion points rather than picking your own spot.

How Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Is Performed

1. The Ganesh idol is installed at home or at a community pandal on Chaturthi morning, ideally within the Madhyahna (midday) muhurat.
2. Daily aarti is performed morning and evening through the ten days, with modak, durva grass and red flowers offered to the deity.
3. On Anant Chaturdashi, a final aarti is performed before the idol is taken in procession for visarjan.
4. The idol is immersed in the river with the chant “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya” (“come again soon next year”).

A growing number of households now opt for eco-friendly clay idols that dissolve cleanly in water, in place of Plaster of Paris — worth asking for specifically if you’re buying an idol locally, since it’s better for the river.
