History of the Mandal

The Mandal’s homepage counts about fifteen Marathi families in Chandigarh in the early sixties, and says that before the Mandal existed a handful of them gathered for Dussehra and Makar Sankranti. A senior member’s note says the idea of a Maharashtra Mandal in Chandigarh was mooted in 1962. By the Mandal’s own history, four or five families met in February 1963 and decided to establish it.

The first Ganeshotsava was organised at the residence of Mr Bijur in Sector 16 in 1964. The history says Air Force officers volunteered to airlift the murti to Chandigarh, and that preparations were later made for the visarjana in Sukhna Lake. The Mandal was registered in 1970, and by the Chaturthi of 1978 its premises in Sector 19 stood as a building in the Mandal’s name.
