Where the temple is

Google Maps gives the address as Back-Side Community Center, Near Makhan Majra Light, Sunder Nagar Market, Chandigarh, 160101, and the plus code as MRP8+RG. The address does not name a sector. Searchers often type Sector 32 or Sector 29; a Google Maps search for Khatu Shyam Mandir in either of those sectors returns this same listing and no other Khatu Shyam temple. The simplest way to find it is to type Shree Khatu Shyam Mandir Chandigarh Dhaam into Maps.

If you searched for “Khatu Shyam Mandir Panchkula”: this page is about the Chandigarh temple above. There is also a separate, smaller Khatu Shyam Mandir in nearby Pinjore, Haryana (Google Maps: 4.8 stars, plus code QWX8+8W8, no phone listed) — a different temple, not covered on this page. These are the hours the temple’s Maps listing shows; the temple has no website that we could find, so we cannot say whether hours change with the season or on festival days. Aarti times are not published. Ring 098787 30946 before a very early or late visit.

Do not assume this temple follows the schedule of the original Khatu Shyam temple in Rajasthan. The website that Wikipedia lists for that temple, khatu-shyam.in, publishes different times for it: in winter 5:30 AM to 1 PM and 4:30 to 9 PM, and in summer 4:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 4 to 10 PM.

Ekadashi dates in Chandigarh

The Khatu temple’s website keeps an Ekadashi calendar for devotees, so we list the dates here. Whether the Chandigarh temple holds anything special on these days is not published, so ask on 098787 30946. Drik Panchang calculates these dates for Chandigarh:

The Falgun Mela at Khatu is held in the Hindu month of Falgun, February to March, according to Wikipedia, which says lakhs of devotees join a procession carrying the Nishan, a sacred triangular flag. Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi falls on 18 March 2027; confirm the mela days with the Khatu temple.

Who Khatu Shyam Ji is

Wikipedia says Khatu Shyam Ji is believed to be Barbareek, the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha. The main temple is at Khatoo in Sikar district, Rajasthan; Wikipedia says it was originally built in 1027 CE by Roop Singh Chauhan, and that the present building uses white Makrana marble. The account on the Khatu website says Barbarik would have fought for whichever side was losing, so Krishna asked for his head before the Mahabharata war, and that the head was later found at Khatu when villagers dug the ground where a cow’s milk had flowed. Tellings differ, so treat this as the tradition and not as history.

Google Maps also lists a Khatu Shyam temple at Pinjore (Khatu Shayam Mandir pinjor, plus code QWX8+8W8, Pinjore, Haryana 134102, open 4 AM to 9 PM every day) and Shree Sanatan Dharam Khatu Shyam Ji Mandir Baltana (plus code MRCJ+CJH, Sector 19, Zirakpur, Haryana 140604). We have not visited or verified either, so confirm before you travel.
